Youth Employment and Education Program
YouthWorks Indy
On April 27, Mayor Ballard announced a summer jobs and educational program for Marion County residents ages 16 - 24. YouthWorks Indy will provide paid positions, education, and job skills training to 575 young adults from June 8th through July 31st. The Indianapolis Private Industry Council will manage the program using federal stimulus funds designated for employment and training. YouthWorks Indy participants were chosen based on priority of service to Veterans, past, present of Fall 2009 enrolling Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) participants, Youth Employment Services (YES) participants and current WIA Adult, Dislocated Worker or Youth participants. Youth Working for Indy
Mayor Ballard is asking businesses and organizations to make youth employment a priority and consider hiring youth this summer. Hiring youth this summer will not only provide them with an opportunity to develop confidence, maturity and responsibility - it is also a key crime prevention tool. Click Here for more information. Mayor Greg Ballard joined city officials and crime prevention groups today, as the City of Indianapolis distributed more funds to the recipients of its 2009 Community Crime Prevention Grant Program. The goal of the city’s program is to reduce crime by funding programs designed to fill a documented gap in existing services and promote collaboration among existing institutions, programs, and efforts that involve neighborhood residents. - 6.12.09 WORK BEGINS ON INITIATIVE TO GREEN THE CITY-COUNTY BUILDING
Thirty-five local professionals comprising the Green CCB Development Team along with experts from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) began work this week on a project to green the Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Building (CCB). The initiative announced by Mayor Greg Ballard in April 2009 will involve energy audits and other practices required to retrofit the decades-old CCB, making it more sustainable and generating long-term cost savings. - 6.9.09 GOVERNMENT OF EL SALVADOR NAMES CITY-COUNTY COUNCILLOR AS HONORARY CONSUL TO THE REPUBLIC OF EL SALVADOR
On June 9, Mayor Ballard announced that Jeff Cardwell, City-County Councillor, District 23, has been appointed Honorary Consul to the Republic of El Salvador. Mayor Ballard said he was proud to make the announcement that Mr. Cardwell was the recipient of such a prestigious appointment, and credited Indianapolis’ strong relationship with El Salvador to Mr. Cardwell’s diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.

- 6.3.09 FIVE COMMUNITY PARTNERS RECEIVE $5 MILLION IN NEIGHBORHOOD STABILIZATION FUNDS
On June 3, five non-profit organizations in Indianapolis learned they will receive a combined total of approximately $5 million in funding through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) allowing for greater resources to assist in the rehabilitation or demolition of vacant or foreclosed properties. The funds were awarded by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
