DPW Announces “Project Open Market”

INDIANAPOLIS – (March 5, 2008) -- Indianapolis Department of Public Works Director David Sherman announced today “Project Open Market,” – a comprehensive plan that involves the removal of ramps to Interstate 65/70 on Market and Ohio Streets and the construction of new ramps at Washington Street.

“Project Open Market is a new chapter being written on the near-eastside of our city,” Sherman said.  “The residential and commercial investment already happening just north of here, along Ohio Street, shows that the private sector has already taken notice of what the future holds for this side of downtown.”

Kevin Jasinski of American Structurepoint, who is serving as the project manager, joined Sherman in detailing the phases of the project.  Key steps include providing a new I-65/I-70 southbound on-ramp and a new northbound off-ramp at Washington St., removing the existing ramps at Market and Ohio Streets, relocating the intersection of Southeastern Ave. and Washington St., addressing the appearance of the CSX railroad overpass above Market St., and rehabilitating existing brick sewers under Washington and Market Streets.

Project costs will total approximately $22 million, of which $17 million comes from federal funding and $5 million comes from local funding. Completion of Project Open Market is scheduled for Fall 2009.

Today’s announcement precedes an informational public meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight at the IPS School #14 Media Center, 1250 E. Market St.
