The award honors those who share the late Charles L. Whistler’s dedication of vision, talent and leadership to the betterment of the Indianapolis Community.

With his strong commitment to public-private partnerships, as well as a belief in the potential for Indianapolis to grow and prosper well into the future, Charles Whistler’s legacy lives on in the downtown that countless residents and visitors enjoy each year,” said Mayor Peterson. “It is most fitting that we honor leaders in Charles Whistler’s memory, for it is they who are building on the foundation for success that he so skillfully laid.”
P.E. MacAllister - P.E. MacAllister joined MacAllister Machinery Co., Inc., in 1945, became its President in 1952 and managed the company for 40 years. Today he remains active as its Chairman. Through his knowledge, talent and philanthropic gifts, MacAllister has worked tirelessly to improve both the public and private sectors of Indianapolis. He has produced more than 1,000 programs in 25 years for public broadcasting in Central Indiana on every subject imaginable. In doing so, he has created an oral history of Indianapolis and Indiana that is second to none.
Marge Tarplee - As a businesswoman, Marge Tarplee served as the president of the Central Newspaper Foundation and Corporate Secretary of Central Newspapers, Inc., but what distinguishes her are her 50-plus years of dedicated service to the community and fellow citizens of Indianapolis. Throughout her career she put thought into action through service to numerous nonprofit organizations throughout the city.
Since 1983, GIPC has honored outstanding individuals in the community with the Charles L. Whistler Award. Charles L. Whistler was an extraordinary individual who donated his time and abilities to the Indianapolis community without asking for position and power in return.
GIPC exists to provide a forum in which leaders of the public and private sectors of Indianapolis can work as partners to study, discuss, and address issues of concern and areas of opportunity which effect the progress of the City.
Since its inception in 1965, the Progress Committee has played a major role in bringing together people and representatives from all sectors of the community to solve problems. As an advisory arm to Mayor Bart Peterson, GIPC represents a bipartisan alliance that is a continuing example of the public-private partnership that has played such a vital role in the success of Indianapolis.
