Mayor thanks Governor for order of reassessment for Marion County, freeze of ’07 bills at ’06 levels
Long-term statewide reform still necessary, Peterson says
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson today praised Gov. Mitch Daniels for his order of a total reassessment in Marion County and a freeze of 2007 property tax payments at 2006 amounts.
The governor’s action means that homeowners hit with increases this year would only pay what they paid last year until a new reassessment is completed. Marion County now will work with the state Department of Local Government Finance to implement these changes locally.
“Our neighborhoods are our greatest assets, and so many of them have been threatened by this antiquated, uneven and mind-boggling system of taxation,” Mayor Peterson said. “In neighborhood after neighborhood, we heard from people who didn’t understand what was happening and from those who were scared of losing their homes.”
“On behalf of all Marion County property taxpayers, I commend Gov. Daniels for this decisive action to address the anxiety and apprehension that so many taxpayers have felt in Marion County and across the state,” Mayor Peterson said. “This was exactly the right thing to do.”
The Mayor cautioned that Indiana still needs comprehensive reform and action in the state legislature to drastically reform or replace this antiquated system and to make sure that bills don’t continue to increase even more in the future.
He also applauded the choice of Chief Justice Randall Shepherd and former Gov. Joe Kernan to lead the statewide discussion on consolidation and other reforms at the local level.
