Mayor to present Excellence in Education Award to Y-Press
Indianapolis – Mayor Bart Peterson will present the Excellence in Education Award to Y-Press, the youth news bureau of The Indianapolis Star, for its role in informing the public about local and global matters through a youth’s perspective.
When: TOMORROW, Tuesday, July 17 10 a.m.
Where: Indianapolis Star Headquarters 307 N. Pennsylvania St., Fifth floor
Y-Press began as the Children’s Express Bureau in 1990 and was housed in The Children’s Museum. In 1999, it became an independent organization that gives children a voice in the world through journalism. Members build communication skills by producing their own stories.
In the Sunday edition of The Indianapolis Star, Y-Press produces a column that is exclusively researched, reported and written by reporters (ages 10-13) and editors (ages 14-18) for audiences of all ages. Locally, the bureau has reported on issues such as addictions, Latino youth culture, children in foster care, teen pregnancy, military draft and college tuition challenges. Globally, the bureau has raised its own funds to travel to and report from Benin, Hong Kong, Northern Ireland and national political conventions.
Since Mayor Peterson took office he has given monthly awards to a different school, person or organization for outstanding achievements in education.
