Mayor Peterson to cheer on 'inspirational' Power Soccer players as part of FitCity Challenge
INDIANAPOLIS – More than 90 Hoosier athletes, who rely on power wheelchairs due to a disability or an accident, are getting a kick out of being fit. On Monday, May 7, Mayor Bart Peterson will cheer on players of Power Soccer of Indy during this month's FitCity Challenge.
The Power Soccer of Indy league has grown from 15 kids in 2004 to eleven teams with 90 athletes in what is the only region-wide league in the country. Three of its athletes are on Team USA and will compete for the World Cup in Japan in October.
"FitCity encourages people to use their minds, bodies and spirit to the best of their ability in order to live a healthy and active lifestyle," explained Mayor Peterson. "These teams exemplify what FitCity is all about – they are an inspiration to us all."
What: FitCity Challenge
When: Monday, May 7, 7-8 p.m.
Where: Riverside Park, upper gym, 2429 E. Riverside Dr.
"Power soccer athletes experience the same benefits, receive the same adrenalin rush and have the same competitive spirit as any other athlete," said Karen Russo, president, Power Soccer of Indy. "They are living a healthy lifestyle and staying active through sports; it's just a little different."
United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA) governs the sport of power soccer in the United States. It is the mission and hope of the USPSA that all persons who use power wheelchairs will have the "opportunity" to play and experience power soccer.
