Mayor and Broad Ripple High School students workout together as part of FitCity Challenge
INDIANAPOLIS – Today at 3 p.m., students at Broad Ripple High School will get to show off their muscles – and their weight room -- to Mayor Bart Peterson as a part of the Mayor’s FitCity Challenge.
Funded nationally by a PEP grant, the Broad Ripple High School weight room is open to all students after school to provide them an opportunity to incorporate fitness activities into their daily lives even after the last school bell rings. Nearly 50 students take advantage of the facility regularly – many of whom are a part of the 1000 lb. (boys) and 500 lb. (girls) Club. Club members’ photos are displayed throughout the facility indicating their participation and dedication to fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
After a mini-workout with the students, the mayor will tour the “stretch and relax” room, a fitness area students have access to during school hours as well. Students who may have finished an exam or lesson before their class ends are provided with an access pass to go and “stretch and unwind” by watching an educational program and walking on a stairclimber.
“I applaud the administrators and faculty at Broad Ripple High School for their emphasis on fitness and their innovative solutions to combating youth obesity in our city,” said Mayor Peterson. “Their pride in the fitness facilities and the creativity of their faculty to engage students in fitness activities should be a model for others to follow.”
