Peterson to join mayors from across state to ramp up call for property tax reform, fiscal home rule
Municipal Leaders Need Additional Tools to Fund Budgets, Provide Services
INDIANAPOLIS – With less than two weeks to go in the 2007 legislative session, Mayor Bart Peterson (D), Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold (R), Fort Wayne Mayor Graham Richard (D), and LaPorte Mayor Leigh Morris (R) will join firefighters and police officers Wednesday to ask state lawmakers to give Indiana cities and towns more flexibility to pay for critical services and deal with budget challenges.
When: Tomorrow - April 18, 2007 10:30 a.m.
Where: Outside Indiana Statehouse - West Entrance Government Place Drive
Property tax reform and providing local governments with additional revenue options are major planks of Mayor Peterson’s crime package, which aims to bolster public safety and aggressively fight crime in Indianapolis for the long term.
Mayors and other municipal leaders from across Indiana will also attend the news conference. The Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) is working aggressively to reduce reliance on property taxes and find alternatives for financing local public services.
IACT is a coalition of municipal officials who seek to improve the quality of life in Indiana and has 475 city and town members. IACT advocates for municipalities as the official voice of municipal government in Indiana. IACT also promotes good government through education, training and leadership.
