National conference on “culture of violence” under way in Indianapolis
Entertainment industry leaders, officials from around the country discuss the impact of violent media on kids
INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson, in his role as president of the National League of Cities, is hosting local community leaders from across the country, entertainment industry representatives and academic experts as part of a national summit, “Media Violence and Its Impact on Children,” focusing on the impacts of violent media.
The full-day event comes on the heels of the worst mass shooting spree in American history and a Federal Trade Commission report detailing that minors continue to have access to restricted violent media.
The summit will offer a rare opportunity for key leaders to build consensus aimed at raising public awareness and involvement around the issue of media violence and its negative impacts on youth. It will be webcast live www.ncntv.org .

Program Highlights:
8:45–10 a.m.: Media Trends & Media Violence, Robert Wehling, chairman, Common Sense Media, and founder, Family Friendly Programming Forum.
10–11 a.m.: Research Findings on Media Violence and its Impact on Children, Dr. Ellen Wartella, professor of psychology, executive vice chancellor and provost, University of California-Riverside.
11 a.m.–Noon: Media/Entertainment Industry Efforts to Respond to Media Violence.
