Mayor to use Character Achievement awards to highlight crime prevention programs
Peterson to kick-off new direction for award by honoring local church
Indianapolis – In order to highlight community-led crime prevention efforts, Mayor Bart Peterson will focus his Character Achievement award over the next several months on honoring little-known community programs that provide positive alternatives for youth and other at-risk populations.
The first such community organization to be honored for its crime prevention efforts through the Character Achievement Award is the Second Baptist Church for its innovative use of space to provide youth with a safe place for activities and recreation.
The Mayor will visit with youth participating in the program and present the Second Baptist Church with the Character Achievement award tomorrow.
When: Saturday, April 14 Noon
Where: Second Baptist Church, 3705 Kessler Blvd. North Dr.
The Second Baptist Church “Upper Room” is a space located on the second floor of the building that was renovated and is now being used on the weekends to host social gatherings for youth. The “Upper Room” has arcade games, television screens and other accommodations so teens have a safe alternative to under 21 parties and clubs. The church engaged the youth in the designing and naming of the facility.
Since Mayor Peterson took office, he has given the monthly Character Achievement award to honor outstanding individuals, groups or programs demonstrating excellent character.
