Mayor Bart Peterson’s statement on closure of Coke plant
“The announcement that Citizens Gas & Coke Utility will close its Indianapolis Coke Manufacturing plant is a day we hoped would never come. Despite the best efforts of all involved to sell the plant and keep it open, a buyer could not be found.
Our central focus now is to reach out to the workers and do everything we can to get them the support and assistance they need to prepare for the closing and find future employment.
I have asked the Indianapolis Private Industry Council, the city’s central workforce development agency, to begin reaching out to Citizens Gas to offer targeted job assistance and training programs that will assess worker needs and connect them with the necessary resources to find quality job opportunities.
Our thoughts are with the 300 workers who will be impacted by this closing – some of whom have spent their entire careers earning a hard-working living at that plant. Priority number one is taking care of these employees, and I know Citizens Gas has the same commitment as well. ”
