Indiana Mayors Call for State Lawmakers to Protect Taxpayers
Municipal Leaders Push for New Revenue Options in Statewide News Conferences
INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson (D), Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson (R), and Madison Mayor Al Huntington (R) Wednesday discussed the urgency of property tax relief and the need for new revenue options during this legislative session. The bipartisan coalition of mayors will make their case detailing how property tax reform is crucial to cities and towns across Indiana.
“Municipal leaders statewide are committed to protecting the fiscal health of our communities and we need help from lawmakers now,” said Matthew C. Greller, Executive Director of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. “We urge state legislators to give local governments the tools needed to reduce property taxes and also provide new revenue options to fund the services citizens deserve.” Greller said he’s pleased with the efforts of House Speaker Pat Bauer and Senator Luke Kenley who both have shown their willingness to understand the fiscal challenges facing local governments and the need for the property tax relief.
Mayors held news conferences across Indiana on Wednesday in Fort Wayne, Hammond, Indianapolis and South Bend. The Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) is aggressively working to reduce reliance on property taxes and find alternatives for financing critical services citizens need and deserve.
IACT is a coalition of municipal officials who seek to improve the quality of life in Indiana and has 475 city and town members. IACT advocates for municipalities as the official voice of municipal government in Indiana. IACT also promotes good government through education, training and leadership.
