Mayor to testify at Statehouse on Indy Works, key component of crime package

Indianapolis – Mayor Bart Peterson, joined by Indianapolis business leaders, firefighters and others, will urge an Indiana Senate committee to pass parts of Indianapolis Works, the plan to improve local services and save Marion County taxpayers millions of dollars every year.

Peterson will be joined by representatives of the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors, Indianapolis Downtown Inc., Professional Firefighters of Indiana, International Association of Firefighter Local 416, Warren Township Trustee Jeff Bennett, and many other supporters.

The Senate Local Government Committee will be hearing House Bill 1568, which contains the Indy Works proposals to merge fire services and township assessors countywide.

The bill already passed the Indiana House of Representatives with a vote of 58-39, marking the first time in three years the proposal has received bi-partisan support in the legislature.

When: Tomorrow – Wednesday, March 28
                                         1:30 p.m.

                             Where: Indiana Statehouse, Senate Chambers

The City has already received cost savings of more than $7 million from the merger of the Washington Township Fire Department into the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD).  The remaining components will produce another $15 million or more in annual savings.

“With the merger of Washington Township Fire and the proposed merger of Warren Township Fire into IFD, we have shown that this idea can and does work,” Mayor Peterson said.  “But continuing to do this on a township by township basis is costing taxpayers millions of dollars every year and preventing us from having the world-class countywide fire department our residents deserve.”
