Peterson to join local mayors in push for property tax reform, fiscal home rule

Press conference part of statewide effort in cities throughout Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson (D), Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson (R), and Madison Mayor Al Huntington (R) on Wednesday will discuss the urgency of property tax relief and the need for new local revenue options during this legislative session. The bipartisan group of mayors will make their case detailing how property tax reform is crucial to cities and towns across Indiana.

Concurrent news conferences will take place in Fort Wayne, Hammond and South Bend with mayors across Indiana, including: Tom McDermott of Hammond (D), Leigh Morris of LaPorte (R), Steve Luecke of South Bend (D), Jeff Rea of Mishawaka (R) , Chuck Oberlie of Michigan City (D), Graham Richard of Fort Wayne (D), Ted Ellis of Bluffton (D) and Ernie Wiggins of Warsaw (R).

The Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) is aggressively working to reduce reliance on property taxes and find alternatives for financing critical services citizens need and deserve.

IACT is a coalition of municipal officials who seek to improve the quality of life in Indiana and has 475 city and town members. Property tax reform and providing local governments with additional revenue options are major planks of Mayor Peterson’s crime package, which aims to bolster public safety and aggressively fight crime in Indianapolis for the long term.
