Mayor declares March as Disabilities Awareness Month
INDIANAPOLIS – Today Mayor Bart Peterson declared March as Disabilities Awareness Month in the city of Indianapolis-Marion County to help raise awareness and promote inclusion for persons with disabilities.
“Our city has been consistently recognized as a nationwide model for our commitment to promote inclusion and accessibility for persons with disabilities, but there is still much more that we can do,” Mayor Peterson said. “Opportunities like Disabilities Awareness Month are a great way to celebrate the many contributions that individuals with disabilities make to our community and to remind us that everyone has an important role to play in eliminating the social barriers facing persons with disabilities.”
Collectively, the city will honor Disabilities Awareness Month by:
Displaying artwork created by Noble of Indiana at two Department of Public Works offices – 24th floor of the City-County Building and 604 North Sherman. Since 1953, Noble of Indiana has helped children with developmental delays and adults with developmental disabilities in central Indiana through person-centered services, innovative therapies, employment services and life skills training. Producing a video for WCTY (Channel 16) about Video Relay Service, an expanding technology that is replacing the telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD). Launching an elementary school art contest celebrating a world without barriers. Airing disability etiquette public service announcements throughout the month of March on WCTY (Channel 16).
In addition, the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Disability adopted “Opening doors to persons with disabilities through education” as its key message for 2007 during the February Board Meeting. This theme will be carried throughout its activities this year, such as promoting voter accessibility at Marion County polling locations and developing an employer resource guide that puts disability resources at the fingertips of businesses and jobseekers.
The Mayor’s Advisory Council on Disability was created to promote the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities within the Indianapolis community and to advise the mayor and the city administration on issues that impact people with disabilities.
