Indy lands 425 new telecom jobs with AT&T expansion

INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson today joined Gov. Mitch Daniels, Indiana state legislators and AT&T executives to announce a landmark deal that will bring 425 new telecommunications jobs to Indianapolis.

AT&T will locate a new call center at its Indianapolis headquarters building at 220 North Meridian Street.  The expansion is part of an initiative AT&T announced last September involving the relocation of customer service positions that had previously been outsourced.

AT&T will make a $4.6 million capital investment, and company officials estimate the 425 new jobs will add approximately $10.6 million to the payroll by 2009.  The new call center will provide customer service for AT&T’s high-speed internet service.

“In this highly competitive global economy, companies have more choices now than ever when it comes to expansion options,” Peterson said.  “It says a great deal about our city and state that a premier telecommunications and entertainment company like AT&T chose to invest and grow here.”

The State of Indiana and City of Indianapolis worked in partnership to successfully land the company’s call center, beating out competitors in other states.

“AT&T committed to invest more in Indiana, and the company is as good as its word. AT&T has connected dozens of small towns across the state to the Web, and we are getting hundreds of new jobs, all the result of telecom deregulation and video reform,” said Governor Daniels.

“These jobs could have gone anywhere in the country. But, they are here because Indiana has created an environment that encourages companies like AT&T to invest,” said George Fleetwood, president of AT&T’s Indiana operations. “I’m pleased that we are expanding our operations here at home.”

To encourage the company’s investment, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation provided up to $1 million in tax credits, and the City of Indianapolis provided more than $279,000 in real and personal property tax abatement.  The deal began with initial outreach efforts by The Indy Partnership, the privately-funded, not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening economic development in the 11-county Indianapolis region.

About AT&T. AT&T Inc. is a premier communications holding company in the United States and around the world, with operating subsidiaries providing services under the AT&T brand. AT&T is the recognized world leader in providing IP-based communications services to businesses and the U.S. leader in providing wireless, high speed Internet access, local and long distance voice, and directory publishing and advertising.
