Mayor to kickoff Martindale-Brightwood Weed & Seed Initiative to fight crime and revitalize neighborhoods
Indianapolis – Mayor Bart Peterson will help kickoff the Martindale-Brightwood Weed & Seed initiative directed at fighting crime and neighborhood revitalization.
When: TODAY, Thursday, February 1 4 p.m.
Where: Oasis of Hope, 1701 E. 25th St.
Last summer, the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood took a proactive approach to absolve the criminal element from its area by applying for Weed & Seed funding. After a vigorous application process, which included an intensive site visit by the U.S. Department of Justice Grant Program, Martindale-Brightwood received official recognition as the seventh Weed & Seed site in Indianapolis.
The U.S. Department of Justice's Weed & Seed program was developed to demonstrate an innovative and comprehensive approach to law enforcement and community revitalization, and to prevent and control violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in target areas. This program has helped foster a better rapport between local communities and law enforcement.
The Martindale-Brightwood Weed & Seed Steering Committee is comprised of several neighborhood agencies including, but not limited to, the City of Indianapolis, Martindale-Brightwood CDC, Oasis of Hope CDC, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indy Parks and each of the four major neighborhood associations in the area.
