Mayor appoints neighborhood liaison focused on crime prevention

Indianapolis –  Mayor Bart Peterson today announced the creation of a new position in the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services focused on community outreach and preventing crime through grass roots efforts.  The mayor has appointed Marshawn Wolley to serve in this new role as Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaison for Crime Prevention.  Wolley’s appointment is effective immediately.

Wolley will join the staff of ten Neighborhood Liaisons, who act as the front line of communication between city government and neighborhoods, residents and businesses.  The position was funded using available dollars within the existing budget for neighborhood services.

In this new role, Wolley will work in partnership with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to assist neighborhood associations and residents with crime prevention techniques and strategies to better organize neighborhood resources against crime.  He also will act as the primary liaison between the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services and IMPD community relations officers, as well as Crime Watch programs, CrimeStoppers and Weed & Seed groups.

“There is nothing more important than keeping our neighborhoods and residents safe,” Mayor Peterson said. “Getting neighborhoods engaged in this multi-front battle against crime is critical. Marshawn, in this new role, will be dedicated to working proactively and creatively with neighborhoods to help provide them with the tools to prevent crime from taking root in their community.”

Wolley’s experience includes working with youth and coordinating cultural educational curriculum for young people.  He has taught African American studies at the middle school, high school and the collegiate levels.  He is involved in various organizations the community, including the Concerned Clergy and the 100 Black Men.  Wolley comes to this new position after working for the Sheriff’s Department.

Wolley is a graduate of Indiana University, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and African American and African Diaspora Studies and master’s degrees in public affairs and African American and African Diaspora Studies.

Wolley can be reached at 327-5205 or by e-mail at mwolley@indygov.org
