Indianapolis to participate in National Conversation on Climate Action

Conversation will feature presentation by Purdue climatologist, public forum

INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson’s GreenPrint Commission will participate with 65 other cities across the United States to discuss the science and what is needed to solve global warming as part of the first annual National Conversation on Climate Action.

While local governments cannot solve the problem of global warming alone, they have an essential role to play through land use decisions, transportation planning, building codes, and their ability to pioneer innovative strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The National Conversation provides an opportunity for communities to have conversations together about global warming, highlight and catalyze local efforts to address the issue, build local awareness, facilitate community engagement and outline tangible goals and concrete actions.

                                      When: Thursday, October 4
                                                 5 to 6:30 p.m.

                                    Where: Indianapolis Zoo Education Building
                                               West Washington Street

The GreenPrint Commission will hold its monthly meeting from 4 to 5 p.m. Then, the National Conversation on Climate Action will begin with a presentation by the Associate Director of the Purdue Climate Change Research Center, Dr. Kevin Gurney, at 5 p.m. A public forum focusing on solutions will follow Dr. Gurney’s presentation at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Gurney recently joined Purdue, with appointments in Earth & Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) and Agronomy. He holds advanced degrees in Atmospheric Science, Ecology and Public Policy. As such, his research spans the broad arena of "global change."  In addition to his science research, Dr. Gurney continues to work in the area of climate change policy through work with negotiators and organizations involved in the Kyoto Protocol.

The National Conversation is sponsored by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and the Association of Science-Technology Centers.
