Mayor to present Excellence in Education Award to the ISO for its School Partnership Program

Indianapolis –Mayor Bart Peterson will present the Excellence in Education Award to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) for its School Partnership Program.

                           When: TOMORROW, Tuesday, January 30
                                      9:15 –10 a.m.

                          Where: Flanner House Elementary School
2424 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street

The collaboration between the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and several Indianapolis Public Schools has provided a vast array of educational and cultural experiences for students. The ISO currently has five schools (IPS #21 and IPS #88, Valley Mills Elementary in Decatur Township, Skiles Test Elementary in Lawrence Township, and Nora Elementary in Washington Township) in their fourth year of an intensive, arts-integrated partnership involving every elementary grade level. The Flanner House Elementary School was later added as a partner. The goal is for the arts to become a catalyst for learning and demonstrating knowledge on a daily basis.

Each partner school works closely with ISO to identify the specific needs and challenges faced in the state-mandated curriculum at each grade level. From there, lesson plans utilizing the arts are created and resources developed to meet those needs. Each school receives multiple units of lesson plans and teaching strategies; needed materials to implement these lessons, including books, CDs, art supplies, instruments, and student journals. Teachers receive ongoing, interactive training on how to implement arts-integrated lessons, and each classroom receives five to seven visits per year from professional musicians specifically trained to interact with young children. Additionally, Dr. Robert Horowitz of Columbia University’s Center for Arts Education provides professional assessment of the program and conducts ongoing research on the effect of the arts on social and academic development.

Since Mayor Peterson took office he has given monthly awards to a different school or person for outstanding achievements in education.
