Community Fair to commemorate September 11 to take place Monday

Mayor Peterson encourages citizens to take part in fair, get involved with charities

INDIANAPOLIS – The City of Indianapolis and United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) will co-host a Community Fair on Monument Circle Monday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of 9/11.

                                  When: Monday, September 11
                                                       10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

                                  Where:  Monument Circle

*Mayor Peterson, UWCI President/CEO Ellen K. Annala and UWCI Board of Directors
Chair John T. Neighbours will attend and be available to the media in the southwest
quadrant from 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Mayor Peterson and UWCI invited local not-profit agencies, charities and human services organizations to set up information tables on the Circle to register volunteers, accept donations and educate the public about their missions.

The fair also kicks off United Way Week in central Indiana, a week-long celebration marking the start of UWCI’s annual fundraising campaign. At noon, Mayor Peterson will deliver a proclamation declaring September 11-16 United Way Week.

UWCI will also host a Thermometer Challenge, a friendly competition on the Circle between AT&T, Chase and IPL. Each company is custom-creating a thermometer to register how much in financial donations fair-goers contribute to “make change” with United Way. The organization that raises the most on-site contributions — and raises the “mercury” highest — will be recognized by UWCI.

This is the fifth year for the community fair, which Peterson initiated in 2002 to commemorate the tragic events of 9/11 by promoting the exceptional work of non-profits and charities and encouraging residents to volunteer, donate and get engaged with the work of these organizations.  This year’s Community Fair is full at more than 150 participating local organizations, but everyone is encouraged to attend and learn about donation and volunteer opportunities in central Indiana.
