Mayor to visit Hope Academy on first day of school
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson will attend Hope Academy during the first day of school and tour the facility.
WHEN: Tomorrow, Thursday, August 3 9:15-9:45 a.m.
WHERE: Hope Academy Fairbanks Hospital 8102 Clearvista Parkway
Hope Academy is one of four new charter schools sponsored by Mayor Peterson that will open in the 2006-07 school year, bringing the total number of Mayor-sponsored schools operating to 16. Hope Academy will serve 30 students this year in grades 9-12, and it is anticipated to grow over the next 6 years to eventually serve 120 students.
Hope Academy was developed by Fairbanks Hospital, Inc. and is designed for students who are recovering from alcoholism or drug addiction. Students will benefit from the opportunity to transition back into the community without having to immediately return to their old high schools – where the pressure to drink or do drugs could have originated. The school is built upon the educational model developed by Sobriety High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, incorporating Sobriety High's restorative justice principles, continual learning plans, and flexible approach to curriculum development. Staff members at the school will be trained specifically to deal with recovering students and their unique challenges.
