Mayor to join community leaders in welcoming historic business back to city’s near southeast side
Claus’ German Sausage and Meat Market will redevelop former brownfield site; move nearly century-old business to Shelby Street
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson will join community and business leaders to break ground at the new location of Claus’ German Sausage and Meat Market (formerly Klemm’s Meat Market), a historic local family-owned business that originally opened in 1913.
Claus’ will set up shop on the site of a formerly blighted brownfield, which is being redeveloped under the leadership of Southeast Neighborhood Development, Inc. (SEND) and Fountain Square Main Street Program. Other project partners include the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the City of Indianapolis, which secured a $300,000 grant from the Indiana Brownfields Program to help revitalize the site.
When: Tomorrow (Wednesday), August 2 10 a.m. Where: 1849 S. Shelby Street
The relocation of Claus’ will mark the return of the nearly century-old business to the near southeast side after it moved in the late 1960s during the construction of Interstates 65 and 70.
The new location, in the 1800 block of South Shelby Street, will be built on two lots, with six adjacent lots to be used for parking. The lots have been unused for nearly a decade after being vacated by a plating factory.
The meat market was originally founded by Karl Klemm at the City Market, with a production facility on Buchanan Street. Klemm’s nephew, Gerhard Klemm, took over the family business in 1968 and relocated to its current South Street location, consolidating production and distribution to one location. Claus Muth, nephew of Gerhard Klemm, began running the family business in 2003, and renamed it in May 2006.
