Mayor to speak at youth peace rally downtown
Event aimed at engaging youth in effort to curb violence, crime
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson tomorrow will call on young people to steer clear of violence and become engaged in community efforts to promote peace in local neighborhoods during the Youth Rally for Peace hosted by Christamore House.
When: TOMORROW, July 18 1 – 3:00 p.m. (The Mayor will speak at 1:15)
Where: Downtown on Monument Circle
Youth are encouraged to participate in the rally to promote Peace in the Streets. The rally will feature DJ Blaze, poetry reading, singing, youth rappers and dance performances. There will also be giveaways, armbands and t-shirts. The event is sponsored by Westside Weed and Seed, Indianapolis Concerned Clergy, Indiana Project Safe Neighborhood, Westside Community Ministries Inc., and Save the Youth Ministries.
The rally is part of a community-wide strategy involving faith-based and neighborhood leaders to encourage community unity, promote peace and engage residents to stand against violence and crime in local neighborhoods.
Local ministers and neighborhood groups have planned and carried out a variety of events aimed at preventing crime and violence, such as weekly neighborhood walks and peace rallies.
