Originally built in 1847, the Monon Railroad pioneered in Indiana an already nation-wide vision: converting railways to greenways for recreation and commuter use. Indy Parks opened the first phase on the Monon Rail-Trail Greenway, from Broad Ripple north to 86th Street on June 23, 1996. Seven years later, the 10.3-mile Monon Trail was completed extending north to 96th Street and south to 10th Street. Today, the rail-trail continues to be a catalyst for economic development and public and private revitalization projects along its corridors. Runners, walkers, bicycle riders, inline skaters and trail lovers alike can experience many of the city’s naturally diverse areas while enjoying the fun and fitness offered by the Monon.
