City using innovative technology to improve school zone safety
INDIANAPOLIS - Please join Mayor Bart Peterson and representatives from the Department of Public Works, Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership and Indianapolis Public Schools, as they announce the installation of new, innovative technology to reduce traffic speed and increase child safety in school zones.
WHEN: Thursday, May 11, 2006
10:15 a.m.
WHERE: Thomas D. Gregg Elementary School - IPS 15
2302 E. Michigan St.
(Press conference will take place on the school grounds at the corner of Keystone and Michigan. In the event of rain, conference will move indoors to the school lobby.)
In a survey of driver speeds in 63 school zones across the country, including Indianapolis, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign found that two-thirds of drivers exceeded the posted speed limit during the before- and after-school hours. One-third of drivers were traveling at 30 mph or more, an issue of great concern given that children are eight times more likely to die if hit by a motor vehicle moving at 30 mph, compared to 20 mph or less.
