Mayor to present Excellence in Education Award to participants in “Beyond Perceptions” art exhibit
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will present April’s Excellence in Education Award to students from Broad Ripple High School, Westfield High School, and 21st Century Charter School at Fountain Square, along with representatives of the Indianapolis Art Center and the Lighthouse Mission. These participants collaborated on Beyond Perceptions, an art exhibit exploring the issue of homelessness.

The art exhibit displays student views of homelessness before and after interviews conducted with homeless people at Lighthouse Mission. The artwork brings to life stories of homelessness through the eyes of those who live it. The goal of the project was to increase students’ awareness of homelessness in Indianapolis, to decrease negative stereotypes, and to bring forth a better understanding and compassion toward those experiencing homelessness.
Since Mayor Peterson took office he has awarded a different school or person each month for outstanding achievements in education.
