What would kids do if they were mayor?
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson wants local youth to "walk a mile in his shoes" - or at least write about it. Peterson encouraged sixth-graders to participate in the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) "If I were Mayor, I would…" essay contest, which asks youth to think about municipal government and the issues that affect them and their community.
Last year, more than 3,000 students statewide entered the contest outlining their plans if they were elected as their city’s chief executive.
The "If I were Mayor, I would…" essay contest is part of IACT’s Youth Development program, which promotes interaction between youth and municipal government officials.
"Some of the best feedback I have received during my time as mayor has come from our young people during my regular visits to local schools," said Peterson. "IACT’s essay contest provides a great opportunity for kids to be creative, use their classroom lessons, and put some of their good ideas on paper."
Students are asked to write a 250-word essay that describes what they would do if they were in charge of their city or town. Eight regional winners and one statewide grand prize winner will be recognized for their creativity and thought during the Indiana Conference of Mayors in June in Evansville.
Deadline for submissions is April 21, 2006. For more information on the "If I were Mayor, I would…" essay contest, or to access an entry form, go to www.citiesandtowns.org. or call 237-6200.
