Mayor to present Character Counts award to eighth-grader at Lincoln Middle School

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will present the March Character Counts award to the Blanca Martinez, an eighth-grade student who initiated, organized, and conducts an ongoing peer tutoring program at Lincoln Middle School.

WHEN: Tomorrow, Friday, March 24

1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Lincoln Middle School

5555 West 71st Street

Remembering the struggles of learning lessons in a new language, Blanca wanted to help other Spanish-speaking students in their efforts to excel in classes taught in their second language, English. After school, she offers translation assistance to students to assist with them with comprehension of their lessons.

In addition to peer-tutoring, Blanca is also a member of Lincoln Middle School’s Student Council and often assists with translating for Spanish-speaking families when they need to communicate with office staff.

Mayor Peterson created the Character Counts Award during his first month in office to recognize acts of good character. He gives the award to recognize students, student organizations, and schools whose conduct reflects exemplary character.
