Mayor Peterson, U.S. Attorney Susan Brooks to honor public safety hero TODAY
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will join United States Attorney Susan Brooks and the leadership of the Indianapolis Police Department in a ceremony honoring IPD Officer Peter Koe, who last week was awarded the national Medal of Valor from President Bush.
When: TODAY, Wednesday, March 22,
3:30 p.m.
Where: Mayor’s Conference Room, 25th floor of the City-County Building
Officer Koe earned the award for his heroic actions on August 18, 2004. On that day, during a 16-minute nightmare, a mentally ill man shot and killed his mother and was spraying bullets throughout the neighborhood with an assault rifle. IPD South District Officer Timothy "Jake" Laird was killed and Officers Timothy Conley, Leon Essig, and Andrew Troxell were wounded. Officer Koe was at the City-County Building when he heard the police radio traffic. When he responded, Koe was shot in the knee and his face was injured by flying glass and debris. Utilizing his handgun, patrol rifle, and techniques he perfected as a SWAT officer, Koe would later explain he "eliminated the threat" by killing the suspect.
Mayor Peterson will present Officer Koe with a city medallion and make a proclamation, declaring today "Officer Peter Koe Day" in the City of Indianapolis.
