Mayor thanks Hendry for service as he leaves Mayor’s Office to lead Indy Partnership
INDIANAPOLIS-Mayor Bart Peterson today announced that Gordon Hendry is leaving his post as director of economic development to become the interim chief executive officer & president of the Indy Partnership.
The Indy Partnership is the regional economic development corporation for the 11-county Indianapolis region, including Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Shelby and Tippecanoe counties.
The Partnership is a non-profit organization supported by investors and governed by a board whose mission is to effect positive change in local economies by providing specialized information to companies and site selection consultants to make informed business location decisions.
The Indy Partnership Executive Committee selected Hendry to replace outgoing president Greg Schenkel, who has accepted a position with the Indiana Pacers. Hendry will assume his interim responsibilities beginning March 7.
"Gordon has worked so hard in many capacities for the people of our city, but really made his mark in the world of job creation and economic development," Mayor Peterson said. "He has been an invaluable member of my team, and although I’m sad to see him leave my office, he will be able to bring his considerable talents to bear for our entire region.
"I will continue to work closely with him and the Indy Partnership to grow new jobs, new businesses and new opportunities for this city and region."
Hendry has served Mayor Bart Peterson since he took office in 2000. He began as Special Counsel, advising the Mayor on public safety issues, and as the city’s first Public Access Counselor, which was charged with improving access to government. He began working on economic development issues in January 2004, and became director of economic development later that year.
Prior to entering public service, Hendry was a corporate attorney with the Indianapolis law firm of Ice Miller, one of the state’s largest law firms. He holds undergraduate degrees in economics and political science from Indiana University and a law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He also studied at the London School of Economics.
