Mayor to bring ‘City Hall for a Day’ to near-eastside neighborhoods tomorrow

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson and members of his administration will bring the second "City Hall for a Day" to near-eastside Indianapolis neighborhoods tomorrow. The outreach efforts will follow the boundaries of the Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO), which is Washington St. to the south, I-70/Massachusetts Ave. to the north, I-70/I-65 to the west and Emerson Ave. to the east.

NESCO includes neighborhoods such as Arsenal Heights, Brookside Bunch, Brookside, Cottage Home, Emerson Heights, Englewood, Fletcher-Lippencott, Grace Tuxedo, Little Flower, Holy Cross-Westminster, Forest Manor Park, Rivoli, RTMT (Rural, Tecumseh, Michigan, 10th), Springdale, TEAR (Temple, Eastern, & Rural), Otterbein, Windsor Park and Woodruff Place.

The Mayor’s "City Hall for a Day" will bring many of the staff and resources of city government to a particular area of the city for one day, allowing the Mayor and city staffers to meet with neighborhood leaders, visit local businesses, see community projects first-hand and take part in other activities and events.

WHEN: Wednesday, February 15

WHAT: NESCO "City Hall for a Day"

Mayor’s Schedule

10 a.m.

· Tour the John H. Boner Community Center, 2236 E. 10th St.

10:45 a.m.

· Stop by the city facility at 604 N. Sherman to visit with employees of the Department of Metropolitan Development and the Department of Public Works.

11:30 a.m.

· Attend a Youth Town Hall Meeting and answer questions from local students, coordinated by the Mayor’s Youth Council, at Arsenal Technical High School Auditorium, 1500 E. Michigan St. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m., when the students will brainstorm and present solutions to issues that the community faces.

12:15 p.m.

· Lunch with Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) Deputy Chief Longerich and firefighters at IFD Station #27, 2918 E. 10th St.

1:30 p.m.

· Visit the Brookside Park Family Center and the mobile Mayor’s Action Center. The Mayor will be joined by Keith Cheney, Public Policy Administrator for Indy Parks.

2 p.m.

· Tour the NESCO area by bus with neighborhood leaders. The tour will begin and end at Brookside Park.

 

Additional Activities

10 a.m.

· The Mobile Mayor’s Action Center (MAC) will open at the Brookside Park Family Center Auditorium, 3500 Brookside Parkway S. Dr. Citizens can come anytime from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to report a problem or request a city service and meet face to face with customer service representatives. Laptops will be on hand so that requests can be submitted instantly. The Mobile MAC will be staffed by Brian Madison, Assistant Administrator of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, and two MAC customer service representatives.

· The Emergency Management Division will have the Critical Response Van, the ANDROS Robot, and CERT trailer available for citizens to look at until 2:30 p.m., also at Brookside Park. Personnel from Emergency Management will be available to answer questions and provide information to citizens concerning disaster preparedness and the work of the Division.

· Indianapolis Animal Care and Control will offer micro-chipping for all dogs and cats at Brookside Park (Family Center conference room). This service will be available until 1 p.m. and costs $10. A microchip is safe, quick and easy lifetime protection for pets that takes just minutes to complete. Pets that become lost or stolen, but have been microchipped, can be scanned by any shelter or vet and the microchip identification will assist in its return. Animal Care and Control will also be conducting a sweep in the near eastside beginning at 9 a.m., looking for abused and stray animals.

· Latino Affairs Director Ricardo Gambetta, Indianapolis Police Department (IPD) Officer Carlos Trincado, IPD’s Latino Coordinator, and Irene Bublick, Latino Liaison for the Public Defender’s Office, will walk door to door visiting with Latino business owners in the plaza at New York and State Streets and also along East Washington St. Several of the businesses in the area have recently been victimized by crime. They will promote the use of IPD’s Spanish helpline and will inform these businesses of the City’s Latino Campaign Against Crime.

· Assistant Deputy Mayor Ellen Quigley will visit Washington Irving Elementary School 14, 1250 E. Market Street. She will be learning more about their physical education program and the school’s status as a "Community School," the only elementary school in the city with this distinction.

· Staff from the IPD Youth Services unit will set up an informational table at Arsenal Technical High School, 1500 E. Michigan St., to provide students with information on IPD’s outreach to local youth and how they can get involved.

10:30 a.m.

· Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell and Kevin Sifferlen, Administrator of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, will meet with neighborhood leaders from Grace Tuxedo at the Tuxedo Park Baptist Church (Basement), 29 N. Grant.

· Assistant Deputy Mayor Eugene Anderson and Faith-Based Neighborhood Liaison Emerson Allen will visit several churches in the area and meet local pastors and church leaders.

· IFD will offer fire safety information and free smoke detectors and batteries at Kroger at 4445 E. 10th St. and at Station 27, 2918 E. 10th St. until 1:30 p.m.

11 a.m.

· Gordon Hendry, the Mayor’s Economic Development Director, will meet with the East 10th St. Civic Association and business owners along the East 10th St. redevelopment area. The East 10th St. Civic Association is located in the Boner Center, 2236 E. 10th St.

11:30 a.m.

· Deputy Mayor Jane Henegar will visit Partners in Housing, 2811 E. 10th St., Suite D. Partners in Housing is a housing development corporation that creates supportive housing opportunities for homeless or near homeless individuals. She will also visit Community Choice Federal Credit Union, located next door to the Partners in Housing office.

12 p.m.

· Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell and Kevin Sifferlen will have lunch with the Emerson Heights Community Organization Executive Committee at the Steer Inn, 5130 E. 10th St., and then will go on a walking tour of the Emerson Heights neighborhood, weather permitting.

12:30 p.m.

· Public Works Director Jim Garrard will meet with residents of the Cottage Home neighborhood regarding updates to infrastructure projects in the area. The meeting will take place at Cannon IV, Inc., 950 Dorman St., a business located in the neighborhood.

1 p.m.

· Andy Fraizer, the Mayor’s Community Development Director, and Ricardo Gambetta, the Mayor’s Latino Affairs Director, will meet with leaders from the Organization for Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE), 2840 E. 10th Street. ONE has placed emphasis on foreclosures and abandoned and vacant properties in the area, as well as outreach to the Latino population in the area.

1:30 p.m.

· IPD East District will conduct their roll call at Brookside Park. Indy Park rangers also will conduct their roll call at this time at the park, and will be available until 3 p.m. to answer questions from the public.

· Dr. David Klinkose, the Mayor’s After-School Programs Coordinator, will visit an after-school program at Brookside Elementary School, 3150 E. 10th St.

3 p.m.

· Mobile Mayor’s Action Center will close.
