Mayor to present Excellence in Education award
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will present an Excellence in Education award to the Andrew J. Brown Academy (AJB) for its phenomenal increase in ISTEP+ test scores.
WHEN: Monday, February 13
10:30 - 11:15 a.m.
WHERE: Andrew J. Brown Academy
3600 German Church Road
In the past two years (from 2003 to 2005), the percentage of AJB’s current fifth graders passing the English portion of the ISTEP+ exam has increased by 33%, the math portion by 64%, and both portions by 48%.
From 2004 to 2005, the percentage of AJB’s current fourth graders passing the English portion of the ISTEP+ exam has increased by 29%, the math portion by 33%, and both portions by 36%.
These astounding statistics represent the implementation of several learning strategies:
--> Operation Breakthrough, a non-traditional classroom and assignment schedule that permits teachers to teach groups of students by learning level in reading and math, and not just by grade level. Within each grade, students are assigned to one of three classrooms with others at a similar performance level. As students progress, they can move into the next performance level.
-->Every Wednesday, music, art, and physical education classes are replaced by one hour of time with special area teachers and reading specialists who provide remediation based on academic need.
-->Parents and teachers volunteer for after-school tutoring to assist students who need additional one-on-one instruction. The program is run by Our Kids, a local daycare provider, and offers homework assistance as well as arts and crafts and physical education activities each school day.
The Mayor's Excellence in Education award is given to recognize students, teachers, groups, and schools whose excellence merits recognition and whose example will inspire others.
