Mayor’s Economic Development Director to cut ribbon at new Starbucks in Lafayette Square Area

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Economic Development Director Gordon Hendry will join Starbucks company officials at the opening of a new Starbucks in the Lafayette Square area.

WHEN: Tomorrow, Friday, February 10

10 a.m.

WHERE: 5060 W. 38th Street

The Starbucks is a joint venture between Starbucks Coffee Company and Johnson Development Corporation (JDC). JDC was formed in 1992 to foster local economic growth and create financial empowerment in long neglected minority urban and suburban neighborhoods by developing entertainment complexes, restaurants, coffeehouses and retail centers in these cities. Earvin "Magic" Johnson serves as JDC Chairman and CEO.

The new Starbucks is located in Marion County’s Community Revitalization Enhancement District (CRED). The CRED designation will help promote economic development in the Lafayette Square area by allowing it to capture incremental revenue taxes, increase tax-base growth, create new job opportunities, and re-use blighted land for the betterment of the community.

Mayor Peterson has made economic development in the Lafayette Square area a priority and has designated the area as the city’s only CRED.
