Mayor praises students for creative art that challenges homeless stereotypes

Peterson encourages community to attend tonight’s ‘Beyond Perceptions’ art show

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson today praised local high school students for their artistic efforts to promote community outreach and challenge societal stereotypes of homelessness.

Through a partnership with Lighthouse Mission Ministries, dozens of creative teens from Westfield High School, Broad Ripple High School and the 21st Century Charter School at Fountain Square met and interacted with homeless residents from the mission. Building on that experience, the students created art work that explores the public perceptions of homelessness.

The Indianapolis Art Center and the Lighthouse Mission Ministries tonight will showcase the teens’ art, along with paintings created by local homeless residents, as part of the "Beyond Perceptions" art exhibition.

When: Tonight, Fri., February 3, 6:30 - 9 p.m.

Where: Lighthouse Mission Ministries, 520 E. Market St.

"Moving beyond the negative stereotypes associated with the homeless issue and developing an understanding of those individuals experiencing homelessness is critical to our community’s efforts to solve this pervasive problem," said Mayor Peterson. "Beyond Perceptions is a great example of our young people helping to lead the way in expanding awareness and encouraging compassion towards our homeless neighbors."

The Mayor encouraged residents to attend the Beyond Perceptions exhibit and said the art show was indicative of Indianapolis’ continuous commitment to shining the spotlight on homelessness.

In December, the Mayor joined nearly 600 volunteers and service providers in reaching out to the city’s homeless through Indy Homeless Connect. The event served nearly 900 homeless residents, connecting them to a variety of services, including job training programs and housing opportunities.
