Inauguration of Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department set for Jan. 2
Community celebration to commemorate historic merger
Indianapolis – The community is invited to a ceremony commemorating the historic merger of the Indianapolis Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Mayor Bart Peterson and Sheriff Frank J. Anderson announced today.
The ceremony will include the inauguration of Sheriff Anderson, who was re-elected to a second term in November, as well as the swearing in of Chief Michael Spears and the commanding officers of the new Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The IMPD takes effect on January 1, 2007.
“Since consolidation became law a year ago, we have been carefully and thoughtfully building what I believe will be one of the finest police departments in the nation,” said Sheriff Anderson. “The IMPD inaugural ceremony offers the community to interact with their new police department, while celebrating the many contributions of the men and women who wear the brown and the blue.”
When: Tuesday, January 2, 2007 Noon
Where: Indiana Convention Center, Sagamore Ballroom
Three committees – the Law Enforcement Transition Authority, the Consolidation Transition Advisory Committee, and the Law Enforcement Steering Committee – were charged with implementing the merger.
The Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Council approved the ordinance authorizing the consolidation of IPD and the Sheriff’s Department in December 2005.
