Mayor to present Excellence in Education Award to Speedway Junior High School
Indianapolis –Mayor Bart Peterson will present the Excellence in Education Award to Speedway Junior High School in recognition of their cooperative spirit and community involvement.
When: TODAY, Friday, December 15 11:30-11:45 p.m.
Where: Speedway Junior High School (in the gym), 5151 W. 14th St.
Eighth grade social studies students collaborated with residents of the Old Speedway City Neighborhood Association in a project that led to the architectural identification and history of homes and, eventually, the nomination and acceptance of areas within the association as historically significant districts.
Teacher Charles Bennett developed a cross-curriculum instructional unit for cataloging homes in the older neighborhoods of Speedway. Students interviewed homeowners, took photographs, determined homes’ architectural style, and prepared a presentation. This information was developed into a nomination of the original platted area of Speedway as a state and national historic district, which were granted in July 2005 and October 2005 respectively.
In talking with each other, residents and students found a renewed appreciation of one another and an increase in community pride. This partnership recently received the first Collaborative Spirit Award from the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center.
Since Mayor Peterson took office he has given monthly awards to a different school or person for outstanding achievements in education.
