Mayor to join state, local leaders in highlighting successful jobs program for ex-offenders TODAY
Indianapolis – Mayor Bart Peterson will join state and local leaders today to highlight the continued growth and success of RecycleForce, an initiative that puts ex-offenders to work “de-manufacturering” and recycling computer equipment and other electronics.
When: TODAY – December 15 1:30 p.m.
Where: Sherman Park, 754 N. Sherman Drive
The work of RecycleForce helps prevent discarded computer equipment, which contain many toxic substances, from entering landfills. RecycleForce provides ex-offenders with up to six-months of support — including job training, social services, transitional housing, mentoring, transportation and day care — until they stabilize their lives.
“Helping individuals who have served their time to make a successful transition back in to society is key to our efforts to prevent crime and keep our city and neighborhoods safe,” Mayor Peterson said. “Stable employment is a vital part of that transition, but jobs can be hard to come by for inmates returning from the prison system. That is why the continued growth and success of RecycleForce is so important.”
The RecycleForce program has proven successful. No former graduate of the program has returned to prison – compared to roughly a 40 percent average rate of recidivism for most ex-offenders.
