Mayor to celebrate opening of two new charter school buildings tomorrow
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson tomorrow will join students and school leaders of two charter schools to officially open their new facilities.
Both events will take place tomorrow (Tuesday), October 31:
8:30 a.m. - Challenge Foundation Academy ribbon cutting, 3680 Meadows Drive. Located on the city’s northeast side in an area historically known as the Meadows, the Challenge Foundation Academy opened this fall with 264 students in grades kindergarten through fifth, and will eventually grow to serve 396 students through the eighth grade. The school had been temporarily sharing space with the Charles A. Tindley charter school.
The opening of Challenge Foundation Academy’s new building represents another positive step for the resurgent Meadows neighborhood, which has seen huge investments over the last few years, including the opening of two new charter schools and the complete revitalization of the once-troubled Parkwood apartments.
9:45 a.m. - Lawrence Early College High School, 7250 E. 75th Street Lawrence Early College High School (LEC) is the result of a partnership between Ivy Tech Community College and the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township with seed money provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and technical assistance from the University of Indianapolis’ Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning. The school opened to 65 sophomores and 94 freshmen on August 15.
LEC is a unique new high school experience that exposes students to college as early as their freshman year of high school. During their freshman and sophomore years at LEC, students will spend most of their time at LEC focusing on meeting the Indiana state requirements for the Core 40 diploma. During their junior and senior years, they will spend more of their time at Ivy Tech’s Lawrence campus, earning credits toward their associate degree.
