City crews hit streets on city’s near-east side as targeted neighborhood clean-ups continue
INDIANAPOLIS – Crews from the city’s Department of Public Works, Animal Care and Control, the Department of Metropolitan Development and the Marion County Health Department will be out in force tomorrow on the near-east side as the city’s targeted neighborhood clean-up and improvement efforts continue.
Attacking neighborhood blight has been a key component of the plan announced this summer by Mayor Bart Peterson and Sheriff Frank Anderson to combat criminal activity.
WHEN: Tomorrow – Friday, October 13 8 a.m.*
WHERE: The near-east side (bounded by 10th on the north, Washington St. on the south, Chester Ave. on the on the west, and Bosart Ave. on the east.)
*Crews will begin the clean-up at 8 a.m. with a brief ‘roll call’ meeting at the Linwood Kroger (4445 East 10th Street), and work throughout the day. The owners of all lots cleaned and mowed by city crews will be cited and have the clean-up costs placed on their property tax bill if they fail to pay their initial fines. The city will then follow through with seeking higher fines through civil prosecution for negligent property owners who refuse to maintain their properties.
The entire comprehensive summer strategy to combat crime calls for an aggressive reallocation of officers to street patrol, increased curfew and warrant sweeps, saturation patrols of high-crime areas, cleaning crew sweeps in hotspots and other efforts.
During a neighborhood clean-up in September in the Martindale-Brightwood area, a crew from the health department found a loaded handgun while clearing high weeds at an abandoned property. IPD removed the firearm and is currently investigating whether the gun could have been used in previous crimes.
