Indianapolis –Mayor Bart Peterson will present the Excellence in Education Award to Indian Creek Elementary School in recognition of teacher Mark Gibson's New Media Class.
Since Mayor Peterson took office he has given monthly awards to a different school or person for outstanding achievements in education.
When: TODAY, Monday, October 16 1:30-2:15 p.m.
Where: Indian Creek Elementary School, 10833 E. 56th St.
Indian Creek is a science and technology magnet school serving 660 students in grades one through five in Lawrence Township. The school has been an Indiana "Four-Star School" for 15 consecutive years.
The New Media class is a new discipline combining innovative multimedia and the computer arts in age-appropriate lessons developed by Mark Gibson. Through the program students author their own DVDs using real-life events they participate in at school. Fourth graders re-enacted the life of a pioneer girl or boy from the 1800s, took digital pictures and video, then made a ten-minute DVD documentary. Fifth graders published Podcasts on the Internet of lessons such as "Wander Indiana," "Pioneer Week," and "The Harp."
Gibson's classroom was recently recognized by Microsoft Inc. and cited as a place where "students leave prepared to work on any computer." This is a comprehensive case study that looked closely into how schools use Microsoft Office products at all grade levels to meet 21st Century literacy and technology initiatives. Last spring, Microsoft sent a film crew out, documented a snapshot of the New Media classes and filmed students in action. The classroom was showcased at MacWorld in San Francisco at the Microsoft pavilion, and Gibson was asked to present at the next MacWorld and conduct a workshop for K-12 educators using Indian Creek New Media student examples.
