City to join Afterschool Coalition in Lights On Afterschool Celebration
7,500 Rallies Aim to Make Afterschool Programs Available to All
INDIANAPOLIS – The City of Indianapolis will join Indianapolis afterschool youth, local business leaders, educators and other official in the Afterschool Coalition of Indianapolis (ACI) sponsored event, Lights On Afterschool celebration.
When: 3-4:45 PM, Thursday, October 12
Where: Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 Michigan Rd.
The celebration in support of afterschool programs will be one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day – the seventh annual Lights On Afterschool Day, organized by the Afterschool Alliance. Speakers at the Indianpolis event will highlight the presence of 125 afterschool programs and the 45 new programs the ACI would like to secure that are necessary to reach the undeserved areas of the city. Local youth will participate in art activities, games, and view a video to celebrating Indianapolis afterschool programs.
The event will highlight three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to Indianapolis: keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours. Hundreds of parents, supporters and community members are expected to attend.
As the umbrella organization that represents after school efforts in Indianapolis, the Afterschool Coalition of Indianapolis (ACI) works to increase the number of after school opportunities available to children and youth. Through collaborative efforts, the ACI supports the strategic planning, development, and expansion of quality programs during non-school hours for all K-12 Indianapolis children and their families. Visit ACI on the web: cms.indygov.org/aci/.
The Afterschool Alliance is a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization supported by a group of public, private, and nonprofit entities (including Young Audiences of Indiana) working to ensure that all children have access to afterschool programs by the year 2010.
