Mayor, City to sponsor Habitat for Humanity home for deserving family

INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson and a host of city employees today kicked-off “Habitat for Humanity Panel Day” on a house sponsored by the Mayor and the City of Indianapolis.

The City formed a partnership with the Indiana Pacers, Marion County Health & Hospital Corporation, Arsenal Tech High School, United Water, LP Products, the Indiana Union Construction Industry and the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership, Clark Dietz, Hannum Wagle and Cline, RQAW, HOK and Ross and Baruzzini to sponsor and build this house. Today, the Mayor and other partners began construction of exterior and interior wall panels on Market Street for the home.

This build will officially start at the home site, 1743 Roosevelt in Indianapolis this Thursday, and will end with a Dedication Celebration in November.  Nikita Byrd and her four children will be the new homeowners.

“Habitat for Humanity has been known throughout the world for it mission of providing the dream of home ownership to thousands of people,” Mayor Peterson said.  “We are so pleased to roll up our sleeves and help this wonderful organization and this Indianapolis family share in this dream.”

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis is a local organization committed to eliminating poverty housing and making home ownership available to very low-income families, most of whom have children and live in unsafe, overcrowded or substandard conditions.

Each qualified low-income family must meet Habitat’s income and credit history criteria, as well as agree to invest 250 hours in budget education classes and assist with the building of their own home.  Each family must also make monthly mortgage payments with a no-interest loan.  Through cooperative partnerships with volunteers, churches, corporations, foundations and builders, Habitat is able to make the dream of homeownership a reality.
