Statement from Mayor Peterson on the passing of Coretta Scott King
"Today, we are incredibly saddened to say goodbye to one of our country’s greatest leaders, Coretta Scott King, who with her husband, changed this country forever.
"In the upcoming days and weeks, I can guess that many people will describe her as being ‘right behind Dr. King every step of the way.’ I, however, believe she was never behind him, but was at his side.
"Because of her leadership and her presence in our nation’s conscience, Dr. King’s dream did not die when he was taken from us. In fact, she continued his fight for human rights and social justice in America and even helped spread that dream around the world.
"I had a chance to meet her when she was in Indianapolis several years ago to take part in our Diversity Lecture Series, and I always will remember how honored and humbled I was to be in the presence of such a wonderful woman. The hearts and prayers of our city are with the King family and all those who remember her great deeds for our nation."
