Mayor to award local businesses for excellence in diversity

Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity Awards marks its fifth year

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will recognize leading businesses and organizations with his Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity Award at an awards luncheon tomorrow.

The awards honor businesses and organizations that have excellent records in workforce diversity, opportunities for diversity education and communication within the organization, community activities that encourage diversity in the community and leadership in developing supportive strategies throughout the organization.

The Mayor also will award the fourth "Sam H. Jones Award" to this year’s top recipient in honor of the late Sam Jones, longtime president of the Indianapolis Urban League.

WHAT: The fifth annual Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity Award Luncheon

WHEN: Wednesday, January 25

11:30 a.m. (Registration starts at 11 a.m.)

WHERE: Westin Hotel

50 S. Capitol Ave.

Winners were selected by a committee convened by the Mayor based on nomination forms submitted by businesses and organizations and meetings held with nominees’ representatives. Winners will be announced at the luncheon.

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the sold-out luncheon.

The Mayor's Celebration of Diversity Awards recognize employers who understand that the city succeeds when we focus on everyone's attributes, including race, religion, culture and background, and abilities within the workplace and in the community. It is an outgrowth of his January 2000 Summit on Race Relations, which brought together more than 900 Indianapolis residents to bridge the gaps that sometimes exist between people of different races, religions and backgrounds. The summit received a national "Best Practices" Award as a model for the rest of the nation to follow.
