Mayor to honor Southport Elementary with Excellence in Education award
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will honor Southport Elementary School with January’s Excellence in Education award for their efforts to encourage students and families to make reading a priority.
WHEN: Thursday, January 19
10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Southport Elementary
261 E. Anniston Drive
The Perry Township Education Foundation provided a grant for a literacy initiative at Southport Elementary entitled, "15-5 Reading is Alive." Parents sign a commitment card that they will read to or with their children for 15 minutes a day, five days a week. Families used yard signs to promote family reading, and students were loaned disposable cameras to have photographs taken at home of their favorite reading spot. These photographs are displayed at regularly scheduled Family Literacy Nights, which include dinner in the cafeteria, activity stations, celebrity readers and door prizes.
Additionally, a literacy coach and literacy facilitator work with staff to develop an environment that fosters an interest in reading and writing and provides intensive one-on-one instruction to help emerging readers learn how to become independent readers. A grade-level computer library was also purchased to increase the connection between reading and writing.
