Mayor Peterson to spend King holiday at two major community events

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will spend this coming Monday, January 16 - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - participating in two major community events to celebrate the life of one of America’s greatest civil and human rights leaders.

MONDAY., JAN. 16 -- City offices are closed.

9 a.m. Attend 13th Annual "Peace in the Streets - Stop the Violence" MLK Youth Breakfast, sponsored by Indiana Project Safe Neighborhoods. Where: Washington Middle School, 2215 W. Washington St.

10 a.m. Attend MLK celebration at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA). On Monday, IMA will offer free admission to all the museum’s galleries and Lilly House and will feature art-making activities, musical performances, films and tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Mayor will join Congresswoman Julia Carson, State Reps. Carolene Mays & Vanessa Summers; City-County Council President Monroe Gray; Bishop T. Garrott Benjamin Jr., Light of the Word Christian Church; Amos Brown, Radio One; IMA Board Chairman John Thompson, IMA Board Member Myra Selby, Mexican Consul General Sergio Aguilera; and Alain Weber, International School. Where: IMA, 4000 Michigan Rd.

Members of the Peterson administration also will be attending the annual Indiana Christian Leadership Conference MLK Day celebration at Martin University, and the King Commemorative Celebration at the Madame Walker Theatre.

For the past six years, Peterson has hosted an official city observance of Dr. King’s birthday for local leaders, city-county employees and Indianapolis residents, which was held this past Monday.

He also met this week with employees of the Solid Waste Division of the Indianapolis Department of Public Works to thank them for their work. Dr. King spoke to striking sanitation workers in Memphis, TN on the day before his assassination.
