The IEC is Indiana’s largest Small Business Incubator and has more than 40 clients. Its mission is to increase the rate of small business successes by making it easier for its client companies to prosper during the early stages of business development. Research shows that new businesses starting out in business incubator facilities have an 87% survival rate while new business startups in the open market suffer an 80% failure rate.
The Indianapolis Enterprise Center is holding a re-opening ceremony to celebrate the expansion of services available to incubator tenants. Prior to its acquisition by Scott Meyers of Temple Asset Management in May of 2005, it had functioned as a no-frills office building. From 1993-2002, the facility had been a small business incubator called the Entrepreneur Business Center.
Today, the IEC, a member of the National Business Incubation Association, aims to help fledgling businesses by offering: low rents; shared secretarial and office services (copier, fax, computers); conference rooms; a 70-seat auditorium; free parking; web site design assistance; monthly business owners forums; financial assistance; the Micro-loan program, a Business Reference Library; free business seminars; 24-hr. security surveillance; and T-1 access.
One of the Center’s clients, Mid-America Health recently signed a contract with the Indiana Department of corrections that will save them nearly $5 million a year as a result of an expanded 4-year medical services contract with new providers, effective September 1st. Mid-America Health credits a portion of their success to low overhead from its operations at the IEC.
Another success story, Affordable Building Supplies, one of the center’s newest clients, was the successful bidder to supply fuel for the new Colts stadium demo project and to provide the underground piping for site utility relocation. Affordable Building Supplies tapped into the IEC’s micro-loan fund and business contacts, which greatly aided their ability to receive the contracts.
Bank One/Chase is hosting the event with John S. Myrland, President of the Indianapolis Area Chamber of Commerce serving as MC. Additional remarks will be made by Jeb Conrad, Executive Director of Indianapolis Economic Development, a division of The Indy Partnership, and Gordon Hendry, Director of Economic Development with the Office of the Mayor.
