Mayor names Thompson to state stadium & convention building authority

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson today announced the appointment of John Thompson of Indianapolis to the state stadium & convention building authority, which will oversee construction of a new multi-purpose stadium and the expansion of the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis.

Thompson is the president & chief executive officer of Thompson Distribution Company, a distributor of mechanical supplies, and of First Electric Supply Company, which distributes electrical supplies. John also is a board member and chief financial officer of CMID, an architectural engineering design firm.

He replaces Derrick Burks as one of the mayor’s appointees. Burks is the managing partner for Ernst & Young, which represents the Indianapolis Colts on several matters. Burks stepped down from the authority to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

"John brings experience and expertise that will help us continue to move this critical project along," Mayor Peterson said. "His diverse range of talents and exceptional ability to communicate ideas will serve Indianapolis well."

Previously, Thompson served as vice president at Mays Chemical Company, where he was responsible for marketing, sales, customer service and purchasing. Prior to that he was a senior associate at McKinsey & Company in both New York and London, where he developed corporate and marketing strategies for major corporations in the United States and Europe.

Thompson received a master’s degree in business administration from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University.

He currently is chairman of the board of governors of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which this past summer reopened following a $220 million expansion that doubled its size, increased exhibit and gallery space and expanded visitor amenities. He has also served on the boards of the Indiana Museum of African American History, Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, City-County Administrative Board, Urban Enterprise Association and Studio Museum of Harlem in New York City.

He joins Barbara A. Lawrence, executive director of the Indianapolis Local Improvement Bond Bank, as the mayor’s appointees to the authority.
