Annual September 11 Community Fair to focus on hurricane victims tomorrow

INDIANAPOLIS - The City of Indianapolis and the United Way of Central Indiana will co-host a "Community Fair" on Monument Circle tomorrow to commemorate the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Mayor Bart Peterson said today.

This annual event, which Mayor Peterson and the United Way started on September 11, 2002, invites local not-for-profit agencies, charities and human services organizations to set up information tables on the Circle to register volunteers, accept donations or educate the public about their missions.

This year's Community Fair will focus on helping victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana will be on the Circle to accept donations - which can include new and packaged supplies, including paper plates, toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, personal items, women's sanitary products, toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, shampoo, soap, combs and brushes, household items and new and packaged clothing items - which will be given to Hurricane Katrina survivors who have relocated to Indianapolis.  The Salvation Army will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items and baby supplies tomorrow as well. The American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis will be accepting financial donations for relief efforts.

The Central Indiana Labor Council AFL-CIO is also mobilizing its members to support the effort.

WHEN: Tomorrow - Friday, September 9

10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Mayor Peterson will be available to the media in the southwest quadrant from 10:45-11:15 a.m.

Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell & United Way Senior Vice President Angela Dabney will be available from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

WHERE: Monument Circle

More than 130 local organizations will participate in the Community Fair. A list of participating organizations is attached.
